Renters Say the Darndest Things
all calls were received this year (Jan & Feb 2010)

yikes
and these aren't even the best ones that are too politically incorrect to even mention...
Hi, I need how much rent is this house (hang-up)
And I would be glad to call you back if you had left a little more information to make that possible like a phone number and what you were calling about.
No M'am, we do not accept dogs.
but my little Barney has been trained to use the bathroom.

There is a hardship clause in my lease. Does that mean I can live here rent free until I get my finances in order?
No M'am, that's not what that means.
separater
You left a message on my answering machine about a rental and you need to be more careful about the numbers you dial.
That was a first-at least she got my message and my call back number. She didn't leave her number so I have no way of knowing what number was misdialed-thanks but your returned call served no purpose.
separater
Is there any way the garage could be used as a bedroom?
No, there is no heating or cooling or window in the garage and the garage door is not airtight. (What were they thinking? Would they leave the door open between the house and garage all the time?)
separater
Is there any way I can see the house on Sunset today?
M'am, have you looked out your window today? No Well, you need to take a look; its snowing and there's 6 inches of snow on the ground. I'll be glad to make an appt with you when the roads are clear enough that we can get there (was this the only person that hadn't heard about the snow storm everyone was preparing for all week?)
separater
Sir, I'm returning your call about the rental.
I've called so many I can't remember which one you are. Can you tell me which one I called about?
Not really, in the message you left you didn't even leave your name or say which property you were calling about. Possibly we can figure it out: Was it a house or duplex and was it in Frankfort or Lexington?
separater
Hello, I'm calling about your other duplex...
Okay, which one is the other one?
separater
By the way before we hang up, do you accept pets?

What kind of pet (goldfish or Pit Bull)? ans: a cat and 2 outside dogs (at this point we needed to cancel the showing because there is no such thing as an outside dog)

separater
I'm calling about the house you got for rent-are the utilities included?
No, with a house if you use the utilities, then its your expense (to include utilities would add $175-$200 to the rent. Are they clueless what typical rent would be for similar properties or are they new in town and this the 1st ever rental call?)
separater
If I give you the deposit can you hold it until the beginning of April because I need to give a 30-day notice where I am now? (Rec'd 2-21-10)
No, it's available now and we cannot hold it for you rent-free for 5+ weeks even with a damage/security deposit from you. (A damage/security deposit is just that; and at some point in the future it would be returned to her or credited to what she owes. This arrangement would cost me a month's rent and not one red penny extra to her).
separater
I'm calling about the place you got for rent...(pause)
Sir, we have more than one, can you please tell me which one? (ans: just tell me about everything you got)
separater
What do you mean my credit report is unacceptable? I don't owe any body anything.
Sir, the problem is you have numerous accounts in collection that you have not been making payments on.
separater
I'm parked out front of this house you got for rent. Can you get over here right now to show it to me?
Sorry, but I'm going to need a little more notice than none.
separater
  Would you do a rent-to-own?
No, if you are acquiring an interest in the house it complicates things from a legal and tax stand point. Not to mention the mortgage company has a "due on sale" clause that means they could immediately call the mortgage due in full. (I thought they only did this with washers and dryers and TVs. If they didn't pay their rent one month I would have to do a foreclosure instead of an eviction)
separater
Would you consider lowering the rent?
It's been $695 for the past 5 years, what amount would you like for the owners to consider lowering it to? (ans: $550)
separater
I'm calling about the duplex advertised in the paper (mentions address) that has 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, equipped kitchen, ceiling fans, patio, storage building, washer/dryer hook-up, separate driveway that rents for $525 on a dead-end street and it says to call 502-695-7728 so could you call me at garble (they rattled their number off so fast I couldn't understand even after playing it back 3 times but they read every word of the entire ad so slowly including my phone number and I had to listen to the whole message each time I played it back)
separater
I'm calling about Woodhill. What about the utilities?

Okay, so what is it you would like to know about the utilities?
(a) the utility company name; or
(b) type of heat ;or
(c) if any utilities are included in rent; or
(d) how much they run;
(e) utility rates or what?
(f) (or maybe if it has indoor plumbing?)

separater
What type of heat does it have? (ans: gas) then click hang up
Obviously, the caller has not listened to or read the news otherwise they would know natural gas rates are at a 20-year low; either that or they have an outstanding unpaid gas bill.
separater

This is Bubba and you can call me back at XXX-XXX

I'd love to call you back but the number you left is one digit short. (Let's see the number of possible combinations would be 10 to the 7th power provided the area code is known).
separater
I'm calling about this house and I'd like to know how much the utilities run? (Ma'm I wouldn't know that-perhaps the utility company could give you an estimate). ans: Well, when I was buying a house they knew exactly how much they were.
Ma'm the owners/sellers most likely had lived in the house you bought and they had paid the bills so they would have known-I've not lived in this property or paid the bills. They were just put in my name 3 weeks ago and I have yet to receive the first bill. (Wonder what happened to the house she bought?)
separater
Just exactly where is this duplex at 230 Woodhill Lane in the Meadows Subdivision located?
I haven't yet figured out how to answer this one. Are they looking for longitude and latitude or for directions from who knows where?
